The California shoe brand is dedicated to distributing water buffalo leather slip-on shoes, hand-crafted by artisans of India, for both men and women.
Mohinders was born when Michael Paratore’s daydream turned into an amazing—and totally unexpected—excursion through India, searching for the source of a beloved pair of woven leather slip-ons. After a meandering journey on trains, buses, and wandering through dusty towns, Michael found the master artisans who make these shoes by hand. He started working with this cooperative of artisans to bring their heritage shoe design to a wider audience.
Today we’re being driven by long-lasting designs and materials, paying attention to the environmental and social impact at every step of our supply chain. We believe in sourcing directly from the people who have hand-made this footwear for generations and integrating any design changes in a way that respects their time-honored techniques. For example, we’ve added a natural crepe rubber sole and padded insole for a more durable, comfortable shoe, but have preserved all other design features and craftsmanship that make this shoe unique.
The artisan cooperative crafts each pair using traditionally-tanned water buffalo leather made in a nearby village, and intricate “cavani” weaving—the braid that runs along the edge of each shoe—to create a slip-on that’s effortlessly wearable, and perfect for everyday adventure.
