What’s your story? Working as a Montana fishing guide, I became frustrated with overbuilt, uncomfortable performance shirts and knew there had to be a simpler, more comfortable solution. After 2 years of R&D, we developed our “secret sauce” which was a blend between viscose from bamboo and polyester. It was the perfect blend between comfortable and technical and shortly after, our first shirt was born.

 

What’s your “why”?

We believe that life’s best moments are experienced outside. In a world of endless gear options and technology distractions, it’s getting increasingly difficult to disconnect and enjoy the freedom of the great outdoors.

At Free Fly, we are driven by the belief that clothing doesn’t have to hold you back from doing the things you love outside; it should actually make those experiences better. That’s why we focus on using the most comfortable natural fabrics to create purposefully designed styles that are simple and timeless.

 

How did you get funding?

We bootstrapped our company with personal savings and we are still in the same boat today as a family-owned and operated business.

 

What’s your flagship product?

Our flagship top is our lightweight hoody. It’s the first fabric we ever developed and it’s designed as the lightest weight sun protection hoody imaginable for people who spend long days outside and on the water.

Our flagship bottom is our men’s breeze shorts. We use a lightweight 2-way stretch shell for the exterior and have bamboo pocket bags for next to skin comfort. The perfect active short that doubles as your favorite throw on shorts after a long day at the office.

 

Who’s your ideal customer?

Our ideal customer is a 45 year old male or female who represents the “weekend warriors”. They love to be outside, travel, and don’t limit themselves to a single activity. They are early adopters and are willing to pay a premium for innovative products and brands.

 

Why does sustainability matter?

So many of our passions are centered around the outdoors and more specifically, water. We use the most sustainable materials and manufacturing processes to make sure our products do not harm the environment. We support a number of non-profit organizations that align with our values to protect the places we love. More information about this can be found here.

 

Do you contribute to your local community?

We support a number of organizations that stand for clean water as well as humanitarian efforts. A few notable organizations we support – Charleston Waterkeeper, Water Missions International, One World Health and Bonefish Tarpon Trust.

 

Advice to other entrepreneurs starting out?

Find your passion and define a niche that lends itself to your strengths. Don’t try to be everything to everyone, just do a few things great. Remain authentic and never forget that your customers are the true heroes behind any brand.
